Converting a Recording to a Clip

Any HTTP or HTTPS recording may be used to create a clip. To convert a recording to a clip, open the recording on the SOASTA CloudTest Repository page and follow these steps:

HTTPS Recording list
  1. The Recording page will display the HTTP or HTTPS traffic.
  1. Click Convert to a Clip in the upper right hand corner of the page. This will cause the Create a Clip From Recording Wizard to display.

Name

  1. The first wizard screen allows you to name the clip, select its timing and decide how much of the recording you wish to convert. The timing choices are:
    1. Sequenced. Messages are sent in sequence. Message 2 is sent as soon as Message 1 receives a response, and so forth.
    2. Manually Timed. Messages are sent at their specified times (or as close to the specified time as possible). For generated clips, the message timing will be determined from the recorded messages.
    3. Evenly Timed. Messages are sent at a specified interval (default is one message per second).

Note: The default is set to the first 99 messages by default. If you wish to convert all of the messages in the clip, you will need to change this setting. Click Next to continue.

Bursts and Think Times

  1. The second screen deals with Think Times. Think times apply to Sequenced and Manually timed clips. If you wish to apply think times, click the checkbox labeled Insert think times and set the threshold values. Pauses will automatically be inserted into the generated clip according to these settings to simulate user think times. Click Next to continue.
  1. If you selected a Manually Timed clip this screen is presented with additional bursting options. Bursts are available for Manually Timed clips only. Bursts are on by default. You may uncheck the checkbox labeled Detect and insert bursts if you wish to disable bursting. If you wish to include bursts, you can change the bursting thresholds. Messages within the threshold are sent as a burst. Messages in a burst are sent as close to simultaneously as possible during execution. Click Next to continue.

Match Targets

  1. The Match Targets screen shows matched targets for the generated clip. Any existing target that matches messages in the recording is included in the Selected Targets list on the right. Click Next to continue.

Create New Targets

  1. The Create New Targets screen shows new targets for those messages that had no corresponding existing target.
  2. Un-checking the box for a new target means that the corresponding messages will not be added to the final test clip. Click Next to continue.

The middle table, Potential SOAP Targets, shows targets that are possibly SOAP, but are not yet resolved (no WSDL target has yet been defined for them). For Targets that appear in this list—an HTTP target will be created if a SOAP target is not provided.

The Binary SOAP Endpoints table shows binary SOAP targets that must be resolved before the Next button is made active. Adding a WSDL URL using the bottom box (and then clicking Apply) will create such a target based on the given WSDL. Once Applys is clicked the lists above are reloaded to detect targets based on the change.

Summary

  • The Summary screen appears. If the test clip information on this screen is correct, click Next to continue. Otherwise, click Back to correct your settings.
  • Next Steps

    1. The test clip is created. When clip generation is complete, the Summary information appears again in the top section. In the lower section, two continue buttons are presented. You can continue to the composition editor to play the clip, or continue to the clip editor to perform additional editing, or simply click Finish to exit the process.
